New Haven police, elected officials and clergymen met at City Hall Monday morning to respond to last week’s racially charged killings in Louisiana, Minnesota and Texas.
The FBI has recognized the department for building trust with the community by having officers walk the streets in the neighborhoods they serve, and has recognized New Haven Chief of Police Dean Esserman as a national leader in those efforts.
Esserman says he wants officers to remember two things about relationships with the black community.
“That to many of us, the uniform brings pride. But to many, it brings pain.”
